Statement by Healthcare Leadership Council President Mary R. Grealy On the Passing of Health Policy Leader Mike Bromberg

Former Executive Director of Federation of American Hospitals Conceptualized Creation of Multi-Sector Healthcare Leadership Council

It is with great sadness that we note the passing this weekend of Mike Bromberg, a leader in shaping health policy in the United States for more than four decades and whose work improved the quality and accessibility of healthcare for millions of Americans.

Mike will be best known as the executive director of the Federation of American Hospitals for 25 years and as founder and chairman of the influential Capitol Health Group consulting firm.  An important part of Mike’s legacy, as well, is his conceptualization in the 1980s of the Healthcare Leadership Council, a convening of leading chief executives from all sectors of American healthcare to bring a cohesive, comprehensive perspective to the most important issues facing patients and the health system.  HLC’s success in addressing these issues is due in no small part to Mike’s vision.

Mike Bromberg will be recognized as a pioneer in the development of modern healthcare policy, envisioning and advocating improvements in the delivery and financing of care.  His imprint on our healthcare system will resonate for years to come.  His creation of the Health Coverage Foundation, a charitable foundation to fund private health insurance coverage for low-income urban families, demonstrated his personal commitment to better healthcare for all.

On a personal level, he was a mentor, advisor and friend to me and so many others to whom he generously gave his counsel and support.  Our deepest sympathies are with his wife, Marlys, and the entire Bromberg family.  He will be greatly missed.
