The Healthcare Leadership Council released the following statement after the President urged Congress to codify his Most Favored Nation pharmaceutical pricing approach:
“America is the proud global leader in medical innovation, with patients here often gaining access to new medicines well before they are available elsewhere in the world. But rising competition from China is challenging our innovation ecosystem, making it more important than ever to craft policies that protect and strengthen it.
“Policies that rely on government set prices from abroad would restrict patient access to critical treatments—particularly for people living with rare diseases, cancer, and neurological conditions—and would threaten the innovation ecosystem that makes those breakthroughs possible.
“We support efforts to ensure that other countries contribute their fair share, but importing foreign pricing models is not the right solution.
“We stand ready to work with Congress and the Administration on practical, forward-looking solutions that improve affordability and strengthen domestic production, while continuing to protect the current and future biomedical innovations patients depend on.”
