The Federal News Network recently published an op-ed co-authored by Maria Ghazal, HLC President and CEO, and Paul Luehr, co-leader of Manatt’s AI practice, outlining steps policymakers should immediately take to help strengthen healthcare cybersecurity.
“Healthcare organizations have taken real action, but cybersecurity can’t be a one-sided fight. Now it’s time for the public sector to step up to help repel these increasingly sophisticated adversaries,” the pair wrote.
The op-ed is centered around the findings of a report written by HLC and Manatt that assessed the growing regulatory burden facing healthcare organizations alongside escalating cyber threats. The conclusion is clear: Stronger alignment between government and industry is essential.
The report highlights three steps for lawmakers and the administration that will help protect patients and the healthcare entities:
- Streamline and harmonize breach reporting requirements
- Establish safe harbor protections for proven cybersecurity practices
- Expand real-time threat intelligence sharing
The piece concludes, “Healthcare organizations are strengthening defenses to protect patients, but they need help. A stronger, more accountable public-private partnership is essential. The next cyberattack is not a matter of if but when, and our collective preparedness must rise to meet that certainty.”
